🌴 Palm Sunday Devotional — “Unexpected King”
Matthew 21:1–11 • Mark 11:1–10 • Luke 19:28–44 • John 12:12–19
The sun is barely climbing over the Mount of Olives, warming the cool morning air. Dust hangs low on the road — the kind that clings to your sandals and settles on your skin. Jerusalem is already buzzing. Passover crowds press into the city, voices rising like a tide. Vendors shout. Animals bleat. Pilgrims sing ancient songs as they climb the hill.
And then… a shift.
A ripple moves through the crowd. Heads turn. Whispers spread faster than the wind.
“It’s Him.” “The Teacher.” “The one who healed the blind man.” “The one who raised Lazarus.” People rush toward the road, craning their necks, standing on tiptoe. You can feel the energy — hope, desperation, longing — all mixing in the air like incense.
Then you see Him.
Not on a stallion. Not in armor. Not with soldiers. But on a donkey — a borrowed one at that. The hooves make a soft, steady rhythm on the stones. The animal’s ears flick. The crowd’s roar grows. Cloaks hit the ground. Palms wave like green flames. Children run ahead, laughing and shouting.
“Hosanna!” “Save us now!” The sound is deafening — joy, relief, expectation all wrapped into one cry.
But Jesus… He doesn’t look like a man riding toward a throne. He looks like a man riding toward a cross. His eyes aren’t fixed on the crowd. They’re fixed on the city — the same city that will reject Him. The same people who will cheer today and condemn Him by week’s end. He knows their expectations. He knows their misunderstandings. He knows their hearts.
And still…. He rides on
Heart Check
Palm Sunday is beautiful, but it’s also painfully honest. The people wanted a king who would overthrow Rome. Jesus came to overthrow sin. They wanted a crown of gold. He came to wear a crown of thorns. They wanted immediate rescue. He came to bring eternal redemption. They wanted a king who fit their expectations. He came as the King they needed.
And that’s where the story touches us.
Palm Sunday isn’t just about a crowd with the wrong expectations — it’s about us. We all carry silent assumptions about how God should move, speak, or rescue. And sometimes those expectations quietly hold us back from trusting Him fully.
Here are a few of the most common ones:
1. “God won’t put more on me than I can handle.”
Many of us were taught this, but Scripture never says it. In fact, God often allows us into places that are too heavy, too confusing, too painful — so we stop trying to handle life on our own strength and finally lean on His.
Sometimes the weight isn’t punishment. It’s invitation.
2. “I’m waiting on a sign from God.”
We expect God to speak in neon lights, open doors, dramatic confirmations. But Scripture shows us a God who speaks in a still, small voice — quiet enough that you have to lean in to hear Him.
Sometimes we’re not waiting on God. He’s waiting on us to take the first step of faith.
3. “God should show me the whole plan.”
We want clarity, timelines, details, guarantees. But God gave Israel manna for one day at a time — not a week, not a month, not a map.
He still leads that way.
Sometimes the lack of a full itinerary isn’t God being silent. It’s God teaching us to trust Him daily, not directionally.
What expectations are holding you back from fully trusting Jesus?
🌿 A BALM Blessing for Palm Sunday
May you welcome Jesus as He truly is — gentle, humble, and full of peace.
May every expectation that has weighed on your heart be laid at His feet like a cloak on the road.
And may this Holy Week open your eyes to the unexpected ways He is saving, healing, and leading you.
Hosanna — He is coming to rescue you in ways you never imagined.

Love this so much thank you Alicia
