Holy Week Wednesday – Disappointment

The night air in Jerusalem felt heavy—thick with the smell of burning oil lamps, roasted lamb, and the dust kicked up by thousands of Passover travelers. Judas walked a few steps behind Jesus, his jaw tight, his thoughts louder than the crowd around him. He could hear the distant bleating of sheep being sold for sacrifice. He could feel the grit of the day’s dust sticking to his sandals. He could taste bitterness rising in his throat—bitterness he didn’t want to name. For months, Judas had followed Jesus with expectation. He had seen miracles. He had heard teachings that stirred the soul. He had watched crowds swell with excitement. But lately… things weren’t going the way he imagined. Jesus kept talking about dying. About suffering. About sacrifice. About a kingdom that didn’t look like the one Judas wanted.

Judas wanted victory. He wanted Rome overthrown. He wanted power restored to Israel. He wanted Jesus to rise, not die.

And disappointment began to rot inside him like fruit left too long in the sun.

The Breaking Point

A woman had broken open a jar of expensive perfume and poured it over Jesus’ feet. The fragrance filled the room—sweet, overwhelming, intoxicating. Judas could still smell it in his memory.

“What a waste,” he had said. “This could have been sold and given to the poor.”

But Jesus corrected him in front of everyone.

Leave her alone… she has done a beautiful thing.”Matthew 26:10

The words stung. The public rebuke burned. The disappointment deepened. Judas felt unseen. Unappreciated. Unheard. Unimportant.

And disappointment, when left unchecked, becomes dangerous.

The Walk Toward Betrayal

As night fell, Judas slipped away from the group. The streets were dim, lit only by flickering torches. His footsteps echoed against stone walls as he made his way toward the chief priests. He could hear his own heartbeat pounding in his ears. He could feel sweat gathering in his palms. He could sense the finality of what he was about to do. The priests looked up as he entered—surprised, then pleased.

“What will you give me if I deliver Him to you?”Matthew 26:15

Thirty pieces of silver clinked into his hand—cold, metallic, heavier than he expected. The weight of disappointment had led him here. The weight of unmet expectations. The weight of a heart drifting from Jesus long before his feet did. And Judas walked back into the night, the silver pressing against his skin like a reminder of a choice he could never undo.

“The devil had already prompted Judas… to betray Jesus.”John 13:2

“Hope deferred makes the heart sick.”Proverbs 13:12

Judas didn’t betray Jesus in a moment. He betrayed Him in a progression.

Disappointment → Offense → Distance → Destruction.

❤️ Heart Check: When Disappointment Leads to Destruction

Holy Wednesday invites us to examine the disappointments we’ve buried—because disappointment is one of the enemy’s favorite doors.

Real-Life Situations Where Disappointment Leads to Bad Choices

  • A marriage disappointment leads to emotional withdrawal… then emotional connections elsewhere.
  • A financial setback leads to desperation… then unethical decisions.
  • A prayer unanswered leads to doubt… then walking away from God.
  • A job loss leads to shame… then isolation and destructive habits.
  • A friend’s betrayal leads to bitterness… then cutting off healthy relationships.
  • A church hurt leads to offense… then abandoning spiritual community.
  • A dream delayed leads to frustration… then forcing doors God never opened.

Disappointment is not a sin. But disappointment unaddressed becomes a breeding ground for sin.

Judas didn’t fall because he was weak. He fell because he was wounded—and he hid it.

Holy Wednesday is an invitation to bring our disappointments to Jesus—before they lead us somewhere we never intended to go.

🙌 BALM Blessing

May Your light shine on every hidden disappointment in our hearts.
Heal the places where expectations were unmet, where wounds were ignored, where hope was deferred.
Protect us from the slow drift that leads to destructive choices.
Give us the courage to bring our pain to You instead of running from You.
Restore our hope, renew our trust, and anchor our hearts in Your goodness.
Let disappointment become a doorway to deeper faith—not a path to betrayal.
In Jesus’ name.

This was good.. gave me something to think about. Never put myself in judas’s place, what he must have thought, and what caused him to do what he did. I do have a disappointment or two but they are in the past and the person is no longer with us. Definitely something to think about! Thank you again my sister.

Oh Alicia I literally examined my heart .. How Judas drifted into those decisions? But somehow money began to be more important than Christ . Wow let us guard our hearts serving God and not (mammon )money.
