The mother Behind Proverbs 31

A Mother’s Wisdom

For our last devotion of this Mother’s Day Series I want to tell you about a mother whose wisdom shaped a king. She was the mother of King Lemuel, and she loved her son deeply. From the time he was small, she understood that God had a purpose for him. So she taught him—not just how to rule a kingdom, but how to rule his own heart. She would say to him, “My son, you must guard your strength. Don’t waste your life chasing things that destroy kings. Stay away from what clouds your judgment. A leader must see clearly so he can protect those who cannot protect themselves.”

She taught him about compassion. “Speak up for the poor,” she told him. “Defend the rights of the needy. Use your voice for those who have none.” She wanted him to understand that true greatness wasn’t found in power, but in kindness.

And she taught him about choosing wisely. “Look for a woman of strength,” she said. “A woman who fears the Lord, who works with her hands, who speaks with kindness, who builds her home with wisdom.” She wanted him to see that character mattered more than beauty, and that a godly partner would shape his future.

All those beautiful words in Proverbs 31—the ones people read at weddings and especially on Mother’s Day—they came from a mother teaching her son how to live with honor. Before they were ever written on a scroll, they were spoken in love from a mother’s heart. This mother’s Prophecy molded him and is still molding lives today. We think sometimes that children are not listening, or that they are tired of hearing the lessons we try to teach; but Proverbs 31 shows us the importance of speaking truth over our children. King Lemuel is only mentioned in the Bible this one time. There are many speculations on who he was by Bible scholars. But the one thing we know for sure is the words his mother spoke to him made a lasting impact on his life. Most kings would tell of their own strengths, accomplishments, and conquests, but this king shared the words his mother taught him. She didn’t know her words would be remembered for generations. She simply wanted her son to walk in wisdom. And God used her voice to guide not only a king, but all of us who read her words today. The world teaches our children lies every day, we as spiritual mothers must teach them truth. Even if you get a sigh, or an eyeroll do not stop speaking lasting wisdom to your children.

The Balm of Her Story

  • A mother’s words shape destinies. Lemuel’s mother didn’t preach to crowds—she poured truth into one child, and God multiplied it.
  • Wisdom begins at home. Her teachings remind us that spiritual formation often starts in the quiet moments of everyday life.
  • True leadership is rooted in compassion. She taught her son that strength is not for self‑gain but for defending the vulnerable.
  • Character matters more than appearance. Her description of a virtuous woman points us toward what God values most.
  • God uses faithful mothers to guide future generations. Her voice echoes through Scripture, proving that no act of teaching, loving, or guiding is ever wasted.
