Mary: Obedience, Surrender, and Suffering

Mary, the mother of Jesus, is often remembered for her purity and humility—but her story is also one of courage, endurance, and deep sorrow. She obeyed God wholeheartedly, even when obedience led her into seasons of misunderstanding, hardship, and pain. Mary’s life reminds us that walking in the will of God does not mean avoiding suffering. Instead, it means trusting Him through it.

A Heart of Surrender: “Be it unto me according to Thy word

When the angel Gabriel appeared to Mary with the astonishing announcement that she would conceive the Son of God, Mary didn’t argue, negotiate, or demand proof.
She simply responded with surrender.

Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word.”
(Luke 1:38)

Mary surrendered before she understood.
She obeyed before she saw the outcome.
Her “yes” to God became the doorway through which salvation entered the world.

What Mary teaches us today:
We should surrender like Mary. We don’t need every detail—just take the next step God places in front of us.

The Sorrow of Misunderstanding: Pregnant Before Marriage

Mary’s obedience came with a cost.
Before she ever held Jesus in her arms, she carried the weight of misunderstanding, suspicion, and potential shame.

In her culture, pregnancy before marriage was scandalous.
People would talk. Joseph himself struggled until God intervened.

Mary obeyed God knowing others might never understand.
Sometimes walking in God’s will means enduring seasons where people misjudge our motives or our story.

What Mary teaches us today::
Just because others don’t understand or support your walk doesn’t mean you quit. God sees your obedience even when people don’t.

A Stable Birth: Did She Wonder If She Had Failed?

Mary carried the Messiah, yet gave birth in a stable. No room. No comfort. No honor.

Imagine the questions that might have crossed her mind:

  • Did I miss God’s direction?
  • Why would the King of Kings be born here?
  • Did I do something wrong?

But then the shepherds arrived, telling of angels who filled the sky with praise.
God confirmed His plan in the most unexpected place.

“Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart.”
(Luke 2:19)

What Mary teaches us today::
God’s plan often unfolds in humble, uncomfortable places. Don’t mistake difficulty for disobedience. Just because it did not go as planned ( your plan) does not mean He left you, or you messed up. Trust Him to lead you even through disappointments. He will send confirmation if you do not quit.

Prophecy and Pain: Simeon and Anna in the Temple

At Jesus’ dedication, Simeon blessed the child—but then turned to Mary with a sobering prophecy:

“…a sword shall pierce through thy own soul also.”
(Luke 2:35)

Anna the prophetess also confirmed Jesus’ identity as the Redeemer.

Mary received both promise and pain in the same moment.
God was preparing her heart for the suffering she would one day witness.

What Mary teaches us today::
Sometimes God reveals both promise and pain. Following Him doesn’t remove sorrow, but He walks with us through it.

Losing Jesus at Twelve: A Mother’s Panic

On the return from Jerusalem, Mary and Joseph realized Jesus was missing—and they had traveled an entire day without Him. Mary and Joseph lost Jesus for three days. When they found Him, He was teaching in the temple.

“Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us?” (Luke 2:48)

Mary didn’t always “get it right,” and she didn’t always understand.
Yet she stayed faithful.

What Mary teaches us today:
Even faithful believers have bad moments. God’s plan may stretch beyond our understanding, but He never loses us. He is not looking for perfection, just a willing vessel.

The Wedding at Cana: “If not now, when?”

At the wedding in Cana, Mary saw a need and brought it to Jesus.

When He responded, “My hour has not yet come,” she didn’t argue.
She simply turned to the servants and said:

Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.” (John 2:5)

Mary encouraged obedience.
Her faith nudged Jesus’ first miracle into motion.

What Mary teaches us today:
Faith means trusting God’s timing and encouraging others to obey Him even when we don’t see the full picture. Be the nudge for those close to you and especially yourself. There is a miracle in the making.

The Cross: The Sword That Pierced Her Soul

Mary stood near the cross as her son—her promised Messiah—was beaten, mocked, and crucified.

No mother should ever witness such agony.
And yet she stayed.
She didn’t run from the suffering.
She didn’t turn away from God’s plan.

The sword Simeon spoke of pierced her soul that day.

But even in her deepest grief, God was working redemption for the world.

What Mary teaches us today:
Obedience may lead to pain or heartbreak, but God is present in our deepest sorrow. He redeems what we cannot understand. Sorrow and pain is not punishment, it is just the wind. We live in a dark fallen world. We will not escape sorrow or pain. But don’t lose heart, He has overcome the world, defeated death and the grave, and we will share in His Glory soon.

Final Thoughts

Mary was highly favored, the Lord was with her, and she was called blessed among women. She was trusted with the holy assignment of carrying the Messiah, the Son of God — yet her life was marked by deep sorrow. Her suffering was not punishment, not judgment, not correction. It was simply the weight of living out God’s calling in a broken world. And through every moment of confusion, pain, and unanswered questions, God was faithful to walk with her.

The same is true for us today. When we don’t understand, when we ask why, when we face seasons of suffering, He is still with us. He will never leave us. Lean on Him. Cling to Him. Trust Him. He will carry you through and make a way where you cannot see one.
